Why has the FBI searched Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate? The investigation and Twitter toilet pictures are explained.
The National Archives stated that Trump should have turned over that material when he left office, and it has requested an investigation by the Justice Department.
There are a number of federal laws that govern the handling of classified records and sensitive government documents, including statutes that make it a crime to remove such material and keep it in an unauthorized location.
The search adds to the months-long investigation into how classified documents ended up in more than a dozen boxes at Mar-a-Lago earlier in 2022.
According to a February statement from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), "in mid-January 2022, NARA arranged for the transport of 15 boxes containing Presidential records from the Trump Mar-a-Lago property in Florida to the National Archives, following discussions with President Trump's representatives in 2021."
"Representatives of former President Trump have informed NARA that they are continuing to search for additional Presidential records that belong to the National Archives."
"These records should have been transferred to NARA from the White House at the end of the Trump Administration in January 2021, as required by the Presidential Records Act (PRA)."
