NEW YORK CITY – The New York Yankees traded pitcher Jordan Montgomery to the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday in exchange for center fielder Harrison Bader.

As part of the deal, which was struck just before the trade deadline, New York will also receive a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Montgomery has been a standout for the Yankees over the last two seasons, posting a 3.77 ERA in 272 innings across 51 starts. However, in his last eight appearances, he was 0-2 with a 5.36 ERA.

The Yankees have traded struggling OF Gallo to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"I still don't think I've ever performed as well as I should have here," Montgomery said. "A much better player than I've ever been, but I think I was consistent and worked my hardest."

Bader has been out since June 26 due to plantar fasciitis in his right foot. He spent six seasons with the Cardinals, hitting.256/.303/.370 with five home runs in 72 games this season. Last year, he won a Gold Glove.

"Harrison Bader is one of the game's elite center-field defenders," said general manager Brian Cashman, who expects Bader to return in September. "So he gives us a lot of lanes."

The trade is a homecoming for the 28-year-old outfielder, who grew up in Bronxville, New York, and grew up a Yankees fan. He attended Horace Mann School in the Bronx, which is about 5 miles from Yankee Stadium.

Montgomery joins a rotation that includes Adam Wainwright and Miles Mikolas, and he will be a key pitcher for St. Louis moving forward, as Steven Matz (knee) is currently on the injured list. On Monday, St. Louis acquired Jose Quintana from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

His departure from New York came just a day after the team acquired Oakland's Frankie Montas.

"We wanted innings, particularly starting pitching," Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak explained. "We felt like our rotation was giving us inconsistency."

When he returns from the IL, Bader will join Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Matt Carpenter in the Yankees outfield, taking some playing time away from Aaron Hicks, who has struggled this season, hitting.230/.353/.330 in 91 games.

After the 2023 season, both Bader and Montgomery will be free agents.
