When Joni Mitchell, a renowned Canadian singer-songwriter who was one of the key figures in music during the 1960s and 1970s, unexpectedly made an appearance with a guitar at the Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island on Sunday, she astounded the crowd.

Mitchell, who dislikes the spotlight, has generally avoided it since suffering a brain aneurysm in 2015. She made a couple brief public appearances while she was recovering: in December, she delivered a rare speech in front of the public as she accepted a Kennedy Center Honor, and in April, she appeared on television at the Grammys and was recognized at a gala for MusiCares, a Grammy-affiliated charity.
