Does the Boston Celtics making a move for Kevin Durant make sense?

Shams Charania of The Athletic reports that Durant hasn't changed his mind about wanting to be dealt this offseason, and the Boston Celtics reportedly proposed trading for Durant in exchange for All-Star wing Jaylen Brown.

The Celtics reportedly offered Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, and a draft selection in exchange for the Nets' premier player, but Brooklyn rejected this offer and demanded Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart, many draft picks, and perhaps an additional player. According to Charania, the Celtics are currently considering their options for how to proceed with negotiations with the Nets. This is a significant event because it raises the possibility that Kevin Durant may be traded, possibly to the club that recently lost the NBA Finals in 2022.

The Boston Celtics believe they are close to hoisting their eighteenth championship banner in team history after losing the NBA Finals to the Golden State Warriors in six games.

The Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum All-Star tandem, who have helped the Celtics become one of the league's top defensive teams while being only 25 years old or younger, continue to be among the league's finest.

Brad Stevens, president of basketball operations, would find it difficult to resist the opportunity to bring Kevin Durant onto a team that is in contention for a championship, though.

Marcus Smart, Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, Al Horford, and Robert Williams III make up the Celtics' current starting lineup, which includes all five members from the 2021–22 season. Boston has struggled with depth over the past few seasons, which is why they acquired Derrick White at the trade deadline and veteran Danilo Gallinari this offseason in addition to Malcolm Brogdon. This team's equilibrium might be seriously upset by making a significant trade for Kevin Durant, especially on the defensive end of the court where their championship identity has been forged.

However, it should be noted that we are not simply discussing any player here. One of the greatest NBA players in history is Kevin Durant.

This is a huge choice that the Celtics are currently debating since opportunities like this to acquire an all-time great who is still in the peak of his career do not often arise.

If you're the Boston Celtics, it almost seems like you have to go "all-in" and pair Kevin Durant with Jayson Tatum, but you also have to be aware of the reality that you just missed winning the title by two games.

Many feel that this current series between the Boston Celtics and the Golden State Warriors would have gone to seven games and anything could have happened at that time if the Celtics had both Malcolm Brogdon and Danilo Gallinari.

While other trade scenarios in the NBA seem to have a simple "yes or no" response, this one is genuinely a 50-50 choice, with neither side really knowing the pros and cons.

The Celtics' prospects of winning the playoffs are undoubtedly improved by the addition of Kevin Durant, but will Boston have to give up too much in the way of depth, defensive zeal, and long-term success?

It will take some time to determine what Durant, Brooklyn, and Boston's futures contain because the NBA is anticipated to be very quiet until closer to the start of training camp.
