""Not only are the Flehartys fortunate," Seline added, "but the lottery is fortunate to have them win it." They are extremely pleasant and cheerful people."

The Flehartys would receive the first of 20 annual payments — $1,680,261.85 after taxes — two weeks after claiming the prize, according to acting Lottery Director Jim Quinn.

Let's take a look at some of the previous Nebraska Powerball winners.

"No one picks 1 and 2," Fleharty told his wife. "'This is my ticket,' she said. 'I'm going to do it my way.'"

The Flehartys' phone number had been changed in the days leading up to the press conference, so they couldn't be reached for comment.

"I needed to organize my thoughts," Lyle explained. He described the experience as "almost incomprehensible."

Following the victory, Dianne Fleharty suggested they purchase siding for the house, and the family joked about other requirements, such as a garage, a new driveway, and a sprinkler system.

Steven Seline, the Flehartys' newly hired tax and estate lawyer, said the Flehartys contacted him at the Kutak Rock law firm's Omaha offices.

The $50.1 million winning ticket was traced to Kwik Stop No. 3 in North Platte, Nebraska, in the hours following the Powerball drawing 28 years ago today.

Dianne and Lyle Fleharty purchased the winning ticket while in North Platte to watch their son play in a baseball tournament, according to Stan Tegler of Hastings, who said he was married to the potential winner's sister.

The Hastings couple, both Nebraska natives, began a press conference four days later at the Nebraska Lottery offices by recounting how they watched on television as the numbers 1, 2, 8, 21, 31, and the Powerball number of 18 were drawn on July 30. Fleharty had earlier chastised his wife for selecting the numbers 1 and 2 on each of the five $1 tickets they had purchased. They claimed it was their first time playing the Powerball lottery, which began just nine days earlier, on July 21 in Nebraska.
