Duffy made her move as they both transitioned to running side by side. She quickly established a five-second lead over her nearest competitor, and she eviscerated the field for the remainder of the 5km run. Duffy finished her triathlon in 55 minutes and 25 seconds, 41 seconds faster than Taylor-Brown.

"It's quite special, but I did say I'm a little tired of always coming second to Flora," Taylor-Brown smiled. "As a result, we need to change that."

Wilde received a 10-second penalty for improperly putting his cycling helmet down during the final transition, which proved fatal. As Yee passed him, Wilde gave him a high five and watched as he won his first Commonwealth Games gold medal. Despite the penalty, Wilde took silver, with Australia's Matthew Hauser taking bronze.

"Isn't it a bit of a fairytale?" "I've worked very hard for this," Yee explained. "This is my big race of the year, and I'm honored to have done it for Team England, my friends, and my family." With so many new countries, hopefully this is the beginning of more people getting involved in this sport."

Duffy's victory was also the result of a fierce battle between Olympic gold and silver medalists. After the swim, she and Taylor-Brown emerged at the front, then worked together to distance themselves from the pack with some blistering cycling.

"It's really unique," Duffy said. "I was kind of laughing when it was just us two off the front. 'Of course it's us,' I thought. Gold and silver were rivals last year. But I also believe we have a wonderful friendship that is truly unique. We can wreck each other on the course, but we're the first to congratulate each other when we cross the finish line.

The men's event was always going to be a tense, high-quality duel between two of the world's best triathletes, with Wilde serving as Yee's nemesis in Tokyo, defeating him to win gold. Wilde set the bar high with a thunderous 750m swim in the vast Powell's Pool at the park's base. He came in third place, behind South African Jamie Riddle and New Zealand's Tayler Reid.

As Yee emerged from his swim 16th and 15 seconds behind the leaders, he was tasked with chasing them down in the 20km cycle. The triathletes breezed through Sutton Park and the bustling Boldmere High Street, with thousands of spectators lining the streets and cheering them on.

"I never gave up because I knew this course was tough and that the hill could kill you every time, so I knew that if I could push on that hill, there was a chance I could catch him," Yee said.

Yee has established himself as arguably the best runner in the sport in his short career. Bit by bit, he dramatically reduced the leaders' 16-second lead. He breezed past Riddle and Reid, then the distance between himself and Wilde shrank dramatically. By the end of the first lap, 19 seconds had been reduced to seven. He was soon on Wilde's right shoulder, poised to pounce.

Yee was followed on the podium by Georgia Taylor-Brown of England and Beth Potter of Scotland, who won silver and bronze, respectively. However, neither could match Bermuda's Flora Duffy's enduring dominance, who is now a two-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist after becoming Bermuda's first Olympic gold medalist last year. The Commonwealth Games erupted in the quiet, wooded surroundings of Sutton Park, seven miles north of Birmingham proper, as the first medal was seized by one of England's brightest stars. Alex Yee, the 24-year-old Olympic silver medalist, staged a masterful comeback to defeat New Zealand's Hayden Wilde and claim the Commonwealth title.

"This is a home Games, and it's the first time in a long time that I've been able to race in front of my parents," a breathless Yee said afterwards. "And at a major event." It's probably my greatest accomplishment ever."
